Getting the Most Out of a Group with a Team Charter

John Follett

There are a number of reasons you should consider creating a team charter. The most important reason is that with a team charter you will be able to clearly explain the purpose of your team. A team charter will also allow you to clearly delegate responsibilities as well as establish the individual roles of each person on the team.

This charter can be used to establish the procedures necessary to communicate with management and other professionals, as well as effectively describing whatever decision-making procedures the team is expected to take.

Team Charter

If you were to take a look at a team charter example used by other organizations, you would likely find that it works as a kind of blueprint for how the team is going to conduct business. Many companies also use their team charter to describe not only the responsibility of the team but also the authority that they have when it comes to making certain decisions and dealing with the issues they are likely to face.

While every team charter will vary somewhat from one company to the next, virtually every team charter example that you refer to is likely to include a section that details the outcomes that the team is expected to deliver. A team charter should also include a summarization of how the team fits within the overarching structure of the organization. The mission and objectives of the team should be clearly defined within the charter which generally means creating a mission statement.

Creating a team charter will provide you with the opportunity to identify each member on the team and what role they have. The members on the team should not only have their name listed, but also their contact information so that other members can communicate with them quickly and efficiently.

Aside from the operations of the team, a team charter should also include information regarding when and how often the team is going to meet as well as what milestones they are expected to meet along the way. A performance assessment can be used to document the performance of the team and manage their progress along the way. Finally, a signature section should be included on the charter that each member signs, proving that they agreed to the contents of the charter and are accountable to it.
