8 Tips for Greater Sales Motivation in the New Year

Jerry Rackley

According to the New Economics Foundation, happiness boosts creativity by 300 percent and leads to 37 percent higher sales. So what does contentment in a sales career look like in your life? If you have never stopped to think about it, the new year is an excellent opportunity. Less stress and greater satisfaction makes a positive impact from C-suite executives down to entry level employees. Make it a goal to seek higher levels of happiness to stay motivated in the sales industry in the coming year, starting with these suggestions:

Organize your space. Though this may seem like an “I’ll get to it later” task, reorganizing your workplace can increase productivity and motivation. Start with your physical workplace, whether that be an entire office or a cubicle. Go through files and shred items that you no longer need. Take stock of personal items in drawers and decide what ones you actually use during the work day and what ones can go home. Declutter the surface of your desk, reorganize drawers and throw things away. Once you have accomplished this, move to your digital space and simplify your computer desktop, email messages and electronic folders.

Surround yourself with positivity. While it is sometimes impossible to steer completely clear of toxicity, do your best to position yourself in positive situations. Avoid office gossip and negative rumors about things like downsizing. Though staying positive during trying times is hard, by working to keep an upbeat attitude others around you will react in kind.

Write a mission statement. The vision of your company, whether you own it or work for it, serves as a guide for your behavior on the clock. Take this a step further by writing your own statement and reviewing it often. Taking ownership of a prescribed mission statement will make you feel more invested in your work and lead to more favorable sales results.

Exercise. The physical benefits of exercise are well-known but it is the emotional perks of getting active that make the biggest impact. Exercise increases blood flow, releases endorphins and stimulates motivation in all areas of life. Take 20 minutes every day to step away from your desk, computer and smartphone to focus on getting and staying fit.

Keep a journal. In fact, keep two journals – one for personal reflection and one to measure business goals. Whether you prefer a handwritten version or keeping track online, take a few minutes every day to jot down your accomplishments, lessons learned and goals for the future based on your experiences. Read back through your thoughts periodically to see how far you have come and reassess personal and professional goals.

Hire a life coach. It is very easy to get so caught up in the monotony of routine to forget about the overarching goals that you have for your life. Scheduling time with a certified personal coach forces you to put all of the details of your family, spiritual and professional into perspective. From there, you can set achievable goals that will make a positive impact over the long-term.

Hire a sales coach. A life coach can help you take a step back and look at the bigger picture; a sales coach can give more specific motivation to help you make and surpass sales goals. Hiring a sales coach is a smart way to break through any limitations or plateaus hindering your growth as a professional.

Tell your friends. Make sales goals and then pass them along to the people around you, whether they are colleagues, family members or your boss. Not only will these people encourage you, but they will also hold you accountable to the benchmarks you set for yourself. Working toward goal achievement in a transparent way increases personal motivation and brings a bigger payoff.
