The Pomegranate Phone - Real or Fake

Jesse Hopps

After months of procrastination, I finally decided to clean out my spam folder this afternoon. One email that managed to slip through the cracks was from a close friend of mine; Subject – New Phone, Pre-Order Today! Of course, I love gadgets so it didn’t take long before I clicked the link and started buzzing around the site.

You’ve probably already heard of the Pomegranate ns08. If not, let me boil it down for you… The Pomegranate is a smartphone that can do everything an iPhone/Blackberry is capable of but it also acts as a projector, a shaver, a coffee machine, and a harmonica!

As I’m sure you can imagine; it didn't take long before I was ready to throw away my Blackberry and jump on the bandwagon. After all, who wouldn't want the ultimate all-in-one device!

Obviously, the Pomegranate does not exist. The site is part of the Government of Nova Scotia’s “Come to Life” ad campaign. That being said, the campaign got me thinking about how far we’ll go as marketers to catch people’s attention. According to the “Come to Life” site, the video has logged more than 2.8 million visits from over 213 countries & territories worldwide. I wonder how many of these “virtual visits” converted into “tourist visits”…

Regardless, I found the ad concept fun, engaging and very forward thinking – especially considering it was created in 2008. If you missed the site like I did, check out the video below:
